The chair was designed and produced at the end of the 1950s and early 1960s by Galvanitas in Oosterhout, the Netherlands. Instead of the usual tube construction, the designer opted for a pressed steel plate frame. A very solid and at the same time revolutionary design for that time. Wim Rietveld, one of the pioneers in the field of industrial design in the Netherlands, described the furniture as functional: 'well-formed, sturdy, usable and inexpensive'.

It is easy to like the S16 chair with visible welds and industrial but warm colors. Moreover, the chair is made of excellent quality.
The seat frame is powder coated and available in many colors (six standard colors). The seat and back are made of wood PAG (pagholtz) that is extremely durable, scratch-resistant, hygienic and without coating.
